Bangkok Itinerary: 7 Days 6 Nights in a Nutshell

Bangkok is probably one of the more affordable places to go for a short escape. But, it is definitely not cheap during peak period (ie. school holidays / public holidays), as well as when the flight tickets are booked pretty last minute so to say.

Nevertheless, the expenses there are fairly affordable and, to a certain extent, cheap.

Though, spending 7 days in only Bangkok city itself is a little too much. At least for us, it is. That's because we felt that the cafes and night markets were quite similar after visiting a few of them, and our hype just died down after a while.

Also, many others (aka most of our friends) might find the shopping in Bangkok awesome and great, but for us, we felt that the shops at different night markets sold generally similar products. I guess it's just that we had a little too much city life for this trip?

Still, we definitely come back to Bangkok again, but probably for either a shorter trip or explore the city's outskirts a little more.

Till then, here's a consolidation of all the places that we've been to for this Bangkok trip:-

(Bangkok) Day 6 & 7: Big Dog Cafe, The Esplanade, Ratchada Rot Fai Train Night Market

Once again, we slept in and did not manage to go for breakfast as planned at SabX2 Pratunam Wanton Noodles. Instead, we had our breakfast at the hotel (again) before heading back to our room to slowly prepare to head out. The nua-ness is real.

By the time we head out, it was already going to be afternoon (dang those cable TV movies that were on!), so we skipped the trip to Platinum Mall (again) for shopping, and headed directly to the next item on our itinerary, the Big Dog Cafe.

Unlike the True Love @ Neverland, the Big Dog Cafe accepts reservations in advance, with 5 different time slots for their customers to choose from.

Dog Interaction Time Slots:
(Advance reservation is highly recommended to avoid any disappointment)
Round # 1: 9:30am - 11:30am
Round # 2: 12pm - 2pm
Round # 3: 2:30pm - 4:30pm
Round # 4: 5pm - 7pm
Round # 5: 7:30pm - 9:30pm

We had made a reservation for the 2nd dog interaction time beforehand, so all we had to do was to arrive at the cafe about 15 minutes early.

Before entering the cafe, we had to remove our footwear and change into the slippers provided by the cafe. The entrance fee (199 THB) does not include any food or drinks, so any food or drinks order is chargeable - Ordered an Iced Latte for the mister, a refreshing soda drink for myself, and a slice of cake each.

Not long after, some dogs came out to interact and play! They are so adorable. Despite being the Big Dog Cafe, they do have some dogs of the smaller breeds too. And a plus point for this cafe is that it is not as crowded as True Love @ Neverland, but of course, the interaction and play space is also not as big.

The happy little Pomeranian - Ferby

A Shibu, whose name I don't know (because it was not on the dog list menu) ;
and the sweet joyous English Bulldog - Beary.

The Big Dog Cafe has a total of 27 dogs (according to their dog list menu), but not all 27 dogs come out at the same time. The dogs will take their turns to come out so as to ensure that they get ample rest, water, and playtime.

And because the weather is mad hot and humid, we also retreated back into the air-conditioned cafe every now and then to rest and enjoy our cakes and drinks before heading back out to play with the dogs again.

The big, fluffy and friendly Alaskan Malamute - Boston.

We had fun interacting and playing with the dogs, and because it was not as crowded, we actually did get more time with the dogs too. When our interaction time is up, we went back to the cafe to chill and finish our drinks and cakes before heading off.

Now, supposedly, our next location was to the Airplane Graveyard followed by the Chocolate Ville. But both were quite a distance away and we were feeling lethargic, so we decided to scrap it and head over to The Esplanade, a shopping centre near the train station, for some shopping and for a full body massage.

After our massage, it was still quite early for the Ratchada Rot Fai Train Night Market, so we went to walk around The Esplanade (which was not much), and ended up at this bazaar at Level 1, Foyer and got some snacks because we were feeling a little hungry.

Ratchada Rot Fai Train Night Market opens only at 5pm and is located behind The Esplanade. So once it was 5pm, we made our way over to the night market. Surprisingly, there were already quite a few people making their way to the night market despite it being only 5pm. Though it was not that crowded when we reached, by 6:30pm, the night market was filled with people everywhere! We grabbed some bites here and there, shopped a little and decided to head back to Terminal 21 to do some last-minute shopping instead.

P.S.: The night markets are mostly about the same.

We shopped at Terminal 21 until most of the shops closed before calling it a day and head back to our hotel room to pack our luggage so that we can have more chill time the next morning and not scrambling around to pack and double-check that we have everything.

On our last day, we slept in, had our last breakfast at the hotel's breakfast buffet (again), headed over to Boots down the street to buy more beauty products, took our time to do our final pack and check, before checking out and heading over to Terminal 21 (again) since we had time before we need to be at the airport to catch our flight.

And because it was lunch hour, every food kiosks and restaurant place was crowded and with a queue line. So, we settled our lunch at the least crowded one which happens to be a Thai restaurant.

Phad Thai

❤︎

I think the next time when we are back in Bangkok, we should really make a mental note to have our breakfast outside more instead of always having it in the hotel. Hahaha.

Okay, that's all for now.
Bye Bangkok. Till we meet again.

(Bangkok) Day 5: Ayutthaya Day Tour, Talad Neon Night Market

FINALLY. After 4 days of being in the city, we are now going to the ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Ayutthaya, for a day tour today!

I bought our day tour package, Ancient Ayutthaya Tour by AK, from Klook at a cost of SGD$ 114.10 for 2 people, and this day tour package includes pick-up and drop-off at Paragon Mall, along with full-day transportation and a guide. So, why not right? Save us the trouble of having to find our own way there as Ayutthaya is situated about an hour's drive from Bangkok.

We met up with our English speaking tour guide at Paragon Mall before we boarded our minibus and left for Ayutthaya.

Our first stop was Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, to see the famous reclining Buddha and the Chedi (the Buddhist Stupa), which can be spotted from a distance away. After our tour guide gave us a talk about the history of Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, we had an hour to roam the area freely to explore before heading to our next location.

Next stop, Ayutthaya Floating Market, because... Lunchtime! We had about 2hours to spend here, which includes our lunch hour. Maybe because it was a weekday, the floating market was fairly quiet and without a huge crowd, so that made shopping a lot easier. Plus, we managed to take the boat ride around the entire market.

This was my first time visiting a floating market, so probably Ayutthaya Floating Market on a weekday probably was not an ideal choice as it was really quiet, hence I did not get to see the hustle and bustle of a floating market, and it feels a little touristy. In any case, we still enjoyed walking around the floating market, buying and trying local food, hunting for souvenirs, feeding fishes, and taking photos.

We had our lunch at the large pavilion in the centre of the market, where the individual store's kitchens were on boats and customers sit and eat on decks next to the boats. It's like our hawker centres, but on decks above water, whereby we are able to choose what to eat from which stall.

After lunch, we managed to catch the traditional dance show at the centre floating stage, which was about the history of Ayutthaya and it's local ways of life. Before we head back to our meeting point to meet up with our tour guide, we went across the streets to see some animals, namely the elephants. It is really so sad to see the elephants enclosed in such a small area. They deserve to be and should be in their natural habitat.

Mama Elephant and it's Baby Elephant.

Up next was Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the most important temple of Ayutthaya. The Wat Phra Si Sanphet was situated in the old Roya Palace, which was destroyed by the Burmese. Hence, we were only able to see and explore the ruins left behind.

Ruins of the old Royal Palace at Ayutthaya.

However, there were 3 Chedis that remains intact, and according to our tour guide, even though the 3 Chedis were built by 2 different Kings, they were all built for a similar purpose.

The 3 Chedis.

Situated next to the Wat Phra Si Sanphet is yet another temple, the Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, a modern temple that houses one of Thailand's largest Buddha image, the bronze gilded sitting Buddha statue.

Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit.

Our 2nd last stop was at the Wat Mahathat, the Temple of Great Relic, is where the iconic Buddha head entwined in the roots of a tree is located at. After which, our last location before heading back to Bangkok was the Wat Chaiwattanaram, the royal temple where religious ceremonies were performed.

The day tour at Ayutthaya ended at about 4pm and the hour journey back to Bangkok begins. Due to the peak hour traffic, the journey took slightly longer and we were dropped off at the Paragon Mall at about 5:20pm, where we headed straight for the Talad Neon Night Market.

Because we were early (we reached about 6pm), Talad Neon Night Market was almost empty with barely any visitors, and a few stalls fully set up and ready to be patronised, while others were still in the midst of setting up their stalls. So, we decided to grab our dinner first since most stalls are still not fully set-up.

Dinner was meh. Nothing too fantastic. After having our dinner, there were more people streaming in and since it was dinner peak hour, most people headed for the food section, which worked perfectly for us because that meant that we have a fairly empty shopping section to ourselves (and some other shoppers of course).

We came across a stall that customises keychains at an affordable rate, so I went ahead to make one each for my closer group of friends. Plus, there was quite a huge variety of designs available to choose from and they were all so cute! I was even managed to find certain characters closely resembling some of our friends. So... Souvenir? Checked!

Talad Neon Night Market was not as big as we thought it would be, so we did not spend a lot of time there. Instead, we decided to head back to Terminal 21 to do more shopping at the One Piece merchandise shop, where we coincidentally met my friend and ended up catching up over coffee till late before we head back to rest for the day.

Thinking back, I realised I spent more at the One Piece merchandise shop as compared to any night market elsewhere. HAHAHA!

(Bangkok) Day 4: True Love @ Neverland, Rua Thong Noodle (Golden Boat), Pa Yak Boat Noodles (The Best of Noodle Boat), Siam Paragon Cineplex

Slept in a little later than usual and had our usual breakfast at the hotel because today is the day where we get to be one with a herd of huskies at True Love @ Neverland! However, in order to be part of the herd of huskies at True Love @ Neverland, one must first be able to be included in at least one of their 2 play sessions with the dogs.
As of June 2018, there are two (2) Huskies Play Time Slots, which are as follows:
Session 1: 12pm - 2pm
Session 2: 3pm - 5pm

Ticket sales for each session is based on first-come-first-serve basis, and each ticket costs 350 THB per person per session, and it includes 1 hour of playtime with the Huskies, a free drink and a free slice of cake.
Knowing that there will be a crazy long queue, the kiasu-ness in me pulled boyfriend along to True Love @ Neverland at 10ish just to secure our queue number. Think that we are early? WRONG! There were already at least 20 groups of people in front of us. Imagine that!

My initial plan was to get a queue number and leave to explore the area. But we scrapped that idea and hung around the compound because I did not expect True Love @ Neverland to be situated so far inside the residential area. On our way in, we realised that it will be a fairly long walk from the train station. If we had not taken a cab, we probably would not have been able to get there in time.

By 11:30am, the queue was snaking all the way outside the compound, and yet there was still a steady flow of people coming in. Soon, the staff member called for everyone to be in line according to our queue number so they can gauge who can be in the 1st session and who will be in the 2nd session. Lucky for us, we managed to be included in the 1st session because about 3 numbers behind us were the cut-off for Session 1. The rest will have to return for Session 2 at 3pm. For those who did not manage to get a number can either patronise the cafe only or come back for another day for the Huskies interaction.

Ticket sales started at 12pm, whereas Huskies playtime officially starts at 1pm. We were seated down in the outdoor area, next to the interaction zone, and was served our choice of drink and cake. Before we know it, it was playtime!

They are all such a beau.

The Huskies are so adorable and obedient! Some are anti-social though, but that is okay cause it's understandable. We went around taking photos, feeding, petting, and sitting around with the pack. It was an experience truly worth queuing for if one is a dog lover.

Our Huskies playtime ended at 2pm with their iconic Huskies sprint back into their home, and everyone headed back to the cafe. We sat around a little while longer to wait for the crowd to disperse and for our cab to arrive to take us to our lunch location.

When in Thailand, how can we not have the Boat Noodles right? So, our lunch hideout was at Rua Thong Noodle (Golden Boat), followed by Pa Yak Boat Noodles (The Best of Noodle Boat). Yes, we are trying both since both are highly raved online.

First stop, Rua Thong Noodle (Golden Boat). We ordered a small bowl (12 THB) of Thai Noodle with Pork and Thai Noodle with Beef, a bowl of Fried Pork Skin with Garlic, and a bowl of Lod Chong. That's all we ordered, unlike other customers in the shop who ordered like at least 10 small bowls of the noodles, because we wanted to leave some space for Pa Yak Boat Noodles (The Best of Noodle Boat).

Rua Thong Noodle (Golden Boat).

I loved the Fried Pork Skin with Garlic and the Lod Chong, but not so much of the Boat Noodles because it was super spicy. A sip of the broth and the spices hit my senses hard. So, boyfriend had to finish my bowl of noodles as well. Luckily we only ordered 1 small bowl of noodles each.

Moving down the street was Pa Yak Boat Noodles (The Best of Noodle Boat).

Pa Yak Boat Noodles (The Best of Noodle Boat).

This time around, we only ordered a small bowl (12 THB) of Thai Noodle with Pork, a bowl of Fried Pork Skin with Garlic, and a bowl of Lod Chong, just in case the noodles were too spicy for me, and it was. The only difference was that this broth carried more hint of sourness in it.

This was my first time eating Boat Noodles and I conclude that Boat Noodles is not my kind of food/dish. Undoubtfully it was very flavourful and one can taste the herbs and spices used for the broth, it just really isn't to my liking. On the other hand, the Fried Pork Skin with Garlic and Lod Chong were definitely to my liking though.

By the time we were done with our Boat Noodles adventure, it was late in the afternoon. Again, was supposed to go get a massage at Let's Relax Spa before heading to The Rome Restaurant for dinner, but our nua-ness set in, and we ended up heading to The Platinum Mall, which we barely even step foot in.

The long walk from Chit Lom Station to The Platinum Mall brought us to Gaysorn Village, which to my surprise, was really nice and none-bustling. We ended up shopping there for their local products instead.

Made our way back to our hotel to rest a little and also to put down all our shopping bags before heading over to Siam again. I think both of us really starting to like Siam area a lot more. Dinner was some street food / small bites here and there, followed by more shopping.

We came across the movie theatre at Siam Paragon called Paragon Cineplex, and they screen movies in 4D. So we decided to catch the movie, Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom, in 4D.

I'm so amazed by the 4DX movie experience. It's like being on the Shrek Ride in Universal Studios Singapore, but better (since it was a movie and not a ride).

No regrets. 4DX just made Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom even better!

(Bangkok) Day 3: On Lok Yun, Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of Emerald Buddha), The Sixth, Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Pad Thai Thip Samai

Okay, I think my liking for the hotel's breakfast is a little too much. Let me tell you why. I found a place that serves supposedly great breakfast online and we were going to head there for our breakfast. And yet, we still grab some food at the hotel before we leave for our breakfast location.

Anyhow, we took a grab to go to this place called On Lok Yun, a breakfast place that serves some bread/toasts, eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, etc. We did not order much as we were a little full from our "mini" breakfast at the hotel earlier (regret), but I must say that the bread/toasts are so good; so soft and fluffy.

Ice Milk Coffee, Bread with Condensed Milk, Egg Custard Bread (Kaya).

 Bread with Condensed Milk.

Today is an excursion day to the Grand Palace and the Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of Emerald Buddha). Both are situated on common ground, whereby the Wat Phra Kaew is located within the palace parameter. The place was huge and we easily spent the entire morning exploring around the area, taking it all in.

As the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew is one of Thailand's sacred sites, before we enter, boyfriend had to get a pair of long pants and I had to get a long wrap skirt at a shop next to the ticketing counter because we were both in shorts/berms.

Once we were done covering up, we headed in through the entrance which led us to the grounds of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. We were there in the morning at about 9:30am and we were quite shocked that there was already quite a crowd. It's so early (to us)!

At the entrance leading to Wat Phra Kaew.

Definitely, it is what they say it is - Wat Phra Kaew is truly majestic and beautiful. Built in 1785, I would say that they'd really done a very good job preserving the entire area. All the details of the buildings, pagodas, statues, and walls are still very much visible and in very good condition.

We spend almost about 3.5 hours exploring the entire place, taking it all in slowly. It was definitely worth our time there! Plus, both the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew have a lot of history behind them, whereby I am pretty sure that some of those wall paintings/illustrations are about those histories.

By the time we are done with exploring the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, we were famished! So, we decided to head across the street for lunch because it was the nearest. Came by this cosy little cafe called The Sixth, and had our lunch there because there was no queue.

The cafes across the street from the Grand Palace were mostly small with little seating capacity. The Sixth was only able to accommodate at most 15 people at once. The other cafes were about the same. Lucky for us, the food at The Sixth was not too bad. Pad Thai was mediocre, and the Green Curry Chicken was good though not comparable to the one we had yesterday. But that is okay; we were satisfied with our lunch.

Green Curry Chicken with Jasmine Rice.

Moving up next was the Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), which is located behind the Wat Phra Kaew and a short walk away from The Sixth. We did not take any photos at Wat Pho because my camera battery went flat (it was heating up under the weather). In short, Wat Pho is famed because of the gigantic golden reclining Buddha. Similar to Wat Phra Kaew, visitors need to be dressed modestly before they can enter the temple. Again, we took our time to explore the grounds of Wat Pho aside from seeing the giant reclining Buddha before leaving for our next location.

Supposedly, our next location was the Wat Saket (Golden Mountain Temple), but we decided not to go as we got tired from all the exploring. Hence, we decided to head over to our dinner place, Pad Thai Thip Samai, earlier. From the research I've done prior, Pad Thai Thip Samai is said to serve the best Pad Thai in Bangkok and there will be a long queue, so it is recommended to head over before the shop opens. And that was what we did.

We reached Pad Thai Thip Samai at about 4:30pm and there was already a queue. The place only opens at 5pm, and we thought we were early. Lucky for us, the queue wasn't that long yet, but shortly after us, the queue went insanely long.

At 5pm, the restaurant started to welcome customers in for dinner and it was filled with customers very quickly. Unlike the usual restaurants, the kitchen of Pad Thai Thip Samai was located right outside the restaurant, next to the entrance. Those in the queue can witness the good teamwork among the staff; cooking, plating, serving, ensuring a smooth and quick service.

They served a variety of Pad Thai, and the indecisive me had a difficult time choosing. Ended up ordering the Pad Thai Haw Kai Goong Sot, Pad Thai Sen Jan Man Goong, and a bottle of Fresh Orange Juice to share.

Basically, the difference between the 2 Pad Thais are:-
Pad Thai Haw Kai Goong Sot: Pad Thai wrapped with a thin layer of egg wrap.
Pad Thai Sen Jan Man Goong: Stir-Fried Pad Thai with the egg mixed within.

Fresh Orange Juice.

Pad Thai Haw Kai Goong Sot.

Verdict: Probably a little over-rated, and both versions of Pad Thai were too sweet for my liking. But, the fresh orange juice was really good though (other than the price of it); refreshing and tasty (sweet) enough.

When we were done with our dinner, it was barely 6pm and the queue outside was getting a lot longer. It was said that during peak hours, the wait can go up to an hour long. It was a right move to reach earlier (before opening) to queue, but I am not sure if it was worth the queue.

So, next on our itinerary was supposed to be the Asiatique (Riverfront Market), but we had difficulty getting a cab.

Soon it started to rain very heavily, so we changed our plan. We did not go to Asiatique, but instead, we went to MBK Centre area to shop before heading back to our hotel and calling it a day.

(Bangkok) Day 2: Chatuchak Weekend Market, Chang Foot Massage, B.Duck Cafe, Ban Khun Mae

Started the morning early at about 8am to have the hotel’s breakfast. Okay, I know. We are in Bangkok and yet I am having the hotel's breakfast? There is something about the breakfasts provided by hotels that I just really seem to like, and I don’t know how to explain it. But yeahh... Maybe it's the international spread that is available? I don't know.

Mini Pancakes with choice(s) of Honey Syrup / Chocolate Syrup / Maple Syrup.

Live Noodles Station.

After we're done with our breakfast, we called for a Grab to take us to the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market. The weather was a killer; it was downright hot. But luckily for us, since we reached Chatuchak quite early at about 9:30am, there wasn’t a crowd.

Chatuchak is a huge market with a total of 27 sections filled with shops that sell clothes, accessories, ceramics, furniture, collectables, books, etc. Basically, it’s like one giant pitch stop for almost everything you need/want. Also, the shops are categorised by product types into different sections. So, all/most shops in the same section sell similar products.

Because it is so huge, it did get a little confusing for us while shopping around Chatuchak, especially since we are first timers there. Fortunately, I had downloaded the Chatuchak App (a Chatuchak Guide) onto my phone before the trip, and boy was it useful! It helped us to find our way around Chatuchak, from shopping to searching for food and drinks to finding the toilet.

After much shopping, our tummies were grumbling. A sign to find some food. At this point in time, it was about noontime, so the crowd was starting to stream in. Boyfriend found a corner shop that sells duck noodles, and since we were really very hungry, we just went ahead and try.

Duck Noodles Store tucked in a corner.

Duck Noodles; 60 THB.

Verdict: It was not disappointing at all.

The duck noodles were really good. The only regret we had was that we did not order enough. By the time we decided that we wanted to order another bowl to share, we realised that there was a long queue outside and the eatery was fully packed (it was a small shop with very limited capacity). So, we decided to leave and keep some space in our tummies for other food instead.

Ice Latte to calm the weather and fuel the energy for more shopping.

Back to more shopping after lunch, but it was getting quite packed everywhere since the crowd was starting to pour in. What made it worse was when my tummy started to hurt a lot and boyfriend had to quickly hunt for a toilet for me. Shortly after, we left Chatuchak for our hotel as it got a little too crowded for us, plus the sun was blazing down on us and it was getting stuffy.

Next stop, Siam! Our initial plan was to head over to the Chang Chui Plane Night Market, but because it is quite a distance away, which will take us approximately 1.5 hours to get there by public transport, we decided not to go.

Siam is conveniently only 4 stations away from Asok Station. Probably because it was a Sunday, Siam was crowded and packed with activities such as celebrity appearance and pop-up markets, etc.

After a day of walking, we decided to get some foot massage at Chang Foot Massage to pamper our feet before heading off to explore Siam area further. There are quite a few massage parlours at Siam area but we chose Chang Foot Massage because it seems fairly popular? In any case, the foot massage was great!

Exploring of Siam area officially starts after our foot massage. We passed by a cafe outside Siam Square One that is super adorable. The B.Duck Cafe! It is so adorable that I just want to get something off the menu so that we can dine in at the small little cafe.

B.Duck Cafe.

We decided to have some ice-cream to share at B.Duck Cafe. Though the cafe also serves desserts, coffee, and other drinks, the weather was really too warm and humid for us, so ice-cream was what we went for.

From the selection of 10 different flavours of ice-cream - Vanilla, Chocolate, Tiramisu, Cookie & Cream, Yogurt Strawberry, Mint Chocolate, Forest Berry, Lemon, Panacotta, and Peach & Mango; we got a single scoop of our classic Chocolate flavour.

After our pitch stop for ice-cream, we continued to explore Siam area until it was time for dinner. Went up and down the streets hunting for a good dinner place for almost an hour because I can't decide until boyfriend randomly chose a restaurant that we passed by probably 3 - 4 times.

The restaurant of boyfriend's choice was: Ban Khun Mae.

The restaurant is located on the street opposite Siam Square One. It may look like nothing on the outside, but it definitely serves some very delicious great food, especially their Green Curry! Okay, for spicy-food eaters/lovers, the green curry might not be for you. But for non-spicy eaters like myself, their green curry was SO GOOD, with the strong herb and curry taste but not at all overly spicy.

We did a little more shopping and exploring at Siam Paragon after dinner before we are calling it a day. By far, I think we had quite a fair bit of good food all thanks to boyfriend. Of course, we had some street food and light snacks here and there every now and then. But the Duck Noodles (lunch) and Green Curry (dinner) were probably the highlights of all the food we had today!

They were both more than awesome and we would definitely go back to have more!
